FL Studio Review : Review of FL Studio Producer Edition 10

    FL Studio Review

    FL Studio Review

Whether you’re just starting out in music production, or have years of experience and have wondered whether FL Studio would benefit you, I’m here to give you the low-down on the pros and cons of FL Studio as a digital audio workstation with this FL Studio Review for the Producer Edition Version 10.

A little background.  My name is Derek Doepker and I have 14 years experience as a musician, and 12 years experience using FL Studio (back then it was called Fruity Loops and lacked audio recording) as a primary DAW.  My primary instrument is guitar, but I compose music in all genres including hip-hop, dance, electronic, as well as rock, orchestral, and others.

I originally used FL studio because of it’s super fast interface which allowed me to lay down quick drum beats and grooves to jam over on guitar.  Very soon that evolved into creating hip-hop and dance music for fun.

As a professional musician, I’ve used other DAWs like Logic, Reason, Garage Band, and my main audio recording software Cubase.

Here’s what I love about FL Studio,

    PROS:

Very fast interface – There is no other program I’ve used that allows me to take an idea from my head to my ears as fast as FL Studio.

Easy to understand and use - Even complete beginners and friends of mine with no prior musical experience are up and running laying down beats and tracks in FL Studio.  It is so intuitive that beginners and experienced musicians alike don’t have to go through a steep learning curve.

Powerful and affordable – It has all the features and benefits you’d expect from any full fledged music production software without the steep price.

    CONS:

Poor “out-of-box” samples - Most music software is lacking in terms of built in sounds, but without upgrading to the for sale synths or purchasing third party virtual instruments or samples, you may find the sounds you have to work with a bit lacking.  Use the money you save on the software to purchase better quality virtual instruments.

(It’s pricey, but the most bang for your buck “all in one in one package I love and use is Native Instruments Komplete)

Not mac compatible – Fl studio is a windows only program.  So for mac users like myself, that means either running windows under bootcamp, or using Parallels software which allows you to run windows programs side by side with mac programs under the Mac OS.

Weak audio production - Fl studio was not designed originally as an audio editing program.  The producer edition does allow for audio editing and it has gotten much easier now in version 10 than in previous version.  But it will never compare to the ease and power of something like ProTools which is the industry standard for audio production.

If audio recording isn’t even something you consider doing, than the producer edition is not something you need.  Instead go with the standard version.

    Recap:

Fl studio producer edition 10 is my”go-to” software for producing electronic, dance, and hip-hop music due to its fast, powerful, and easy to use setup.  For more in-depth projects requiring the use of greater audio editing capabilities, I often run FL studio in rewire mode in Cubase.

If you’re in the market to purchase a DAW either as a primary or supplementary music production software, you can’t go wrong with FL studio.
